Appaloosa Coat Patterns
Blanket - White over hips; may have dark spots.
Marble - Red or blue roan with a dark coloring on the edges of the horse's body and a frost pattern in the middle.
Leopard - White body with dark spots.
Snowflake - Dominant spotting.
Frost - White speckling on a dark base color.
Solid Coat Colors
Grey - Black skin and white/black hairs; coat usually lightens with age.
Fleabitten - A grey coat that developes small, dark spots with age.
Palomino - A golden coat with a white mane and tail. The 'strength' of a the golden color varys, along with the mane and tail. However, this is the palomino. A chestnut flaxen looks very similar to an untrained eye.
Chestnut - Varying red-gold. Liver chestnut is the darkest shade; mane and tail may be light or dark.
Red Chestnut - Another shade of chestnut, which sometimes includes black hairs.
Blue Roan - A black or black-brown body with white hairs, giving a horse a bluish tinge.
Strawberry/Red Roan - Bay or Bay-Brown body; again white hairs give the reddish tinge, like a blue roan.
Bay - Red-brown to dark brown-gold; mane,tail, and legs are usually black.
Light Bay - A variation of bay caused by yellow/chestnut hairs.
Bright Bay - Another varation of bay caused by predomination red hairs.
Yellow Dun - A black body with yellow hairs. Blue dun is greyish/blackish hairs. Yellow dun is shown by the Norwedigan Fjord.
Bay Brown - Mainly brown with black muzzle, legs, mane, and tail.
Brown - Very close to bay; hairs are a mixture of black and brown, with black legs, mane, and tail.
Dapple Grey - Rings of hair on a grey coat. These will disappear with age.
